You have enough going on in the middle of the school year to have to worry about applying for internships. Applying for internships can be stressful. Follow these five easy steps to start your search for the perfect internship in the fashion industry.
1) Start Early!
The biggest mistake people make when searching for an internship is they wait too long to start their search. Many fashion companies begin their summer internship application process as early as Fall! Block out time early in the school year to start your search.
2) Start With Your College Counselor
Almost all colleges offer counseling services that have great resources for helping students find both scholarships and internships. Some schools may even have exclusive relationships with local businesses for internships that may not be open to the public. Make an appointment today and ask if your school has any relationships with local fashion companies for internship opportunities.
3) Go Digital!
There are many job board websites now that post fashion internship opportunities. Find a list below. Set a reminder on your phone once a month the check to see if there are any new listings that you can apply for. Internships are available throughout the year for various lengths of time; not just in the summer.
4) Go Direct To Companies
Did you know that 7 out of 10 internships result in a full-time job offer according to internship.com? This means you need to start applying for internships at your dream companies! Make a list of brands and companies that you feel best aligns with your personal aesthetic and values. Go directly to their websites and check their open positions listings if their site offers this.
5) Follow Your Dream Brands & Companies
In addition to the above, begin to follow your dream brands and companies via social media, and especially on LinkedIn and Facebook. These two platforms allow companies to have their own page where they often will post about open positions. More companies today are likely to post about open positions via social media. You want to be the first to know!
